Dwight Myers

Rap Music has always made itself out to be the rebel, the loner. The rogue who exuded a mystique that drew us closer to it. Yet every so there was a participant within the genre that moved opposite of this very image we hold as the rule. An easy-going, amicable guy who’d actually smile at you while greeting you. The type of guy women felt and the most hardened of alpha-males could respect. There are a few in todays rap game that bare these attributes but I want to hail-up one of the forerunners of this category.

Enter Dwight Errington Myers b.k.a. Heavy D

Once he moved passed the mandated “braggin’” raps, he would take us to rooftop parties. And show us how a sharp-witted nice guy pulled the honeys. Also, along with KRS-ONE at the time; he’d blend Jamaican patios (Mr.D is over Jamaican decent) into his flows. Narratives on relationships that spoke without sounding corn, made brother Hev accessible for us dudes, all the while chattin’up the ladies. He was a regular cat who split a lot of mic time with some of the legends with a dangerous, understated ease. Off and on I campaign to bring attention to this guy. I myself co-opted some of the attributes as well I might add…

Hev continues to bring about other talent, from introducing us to his cousin Pete Rock. During the R&B heyday-there was the group Soul 4 Real and a young lady named Monifa. To Carl Thomas’s first disk which contained a hit single “Summer Rain” (produced by the Hevster). Like other Rapper turned Actor-he’s enjoyed steady yet quieter success both on big (Cider House Rules alongside Erykah Badu) and small screens (Boston Public & The Tracy Morgan Show) along as well as Broadway…or Off Broadway (Riff Raff)…

Mr.D, again…I salute you.

Uncle
